While the wisteria is soaking, dig a hole at least 3ft (90cm) away from the wall it is going to climb. The hole ought to be 2-3 times wider than the wisteria’s container. 3. Loosen the soil, add compostMake sure that children and pets don’t eat Wisteria seed pods as they are poisonous. In fact, the whole Wisteria plant is unsafe for humans and pets to ingest, but the seed pods are the most poisonous part. To know where to prune Wisteria, we need to understand how it grows. One or a few shoots will grow more or less vertically. Side shoots will grow out from these, and more side shoots (called tertiary shoots) will, in turn, grow out from the side shoots. Some of the tertiary shoots will be flower spurs. Don’t worry—it’s difficult to hurt this rampantly-growing, unrestrained, often-invasive plant! Pests and Diseases Affecting Wisteria Wisteria may be the queen of climbers as a vertical garden idea, but a queen can rule with an iron fist. Don’t be fooled by the cascade of softness: wisterias will swallow your house whole, if you let them. Sow the seeds an inch deep and at least 10 feet apart in prepared soil, moisten the soil, and keep it moist until the plants have become well established. From Cuttings

Make sure you avoid planting next to structures unless you want the wisteria to grow into it and cause you problems. However, there are times when planting next to structures that could benefit your garden. Planting the wisteria at the base of a pergola is a fantastic idea. The vines grow in and around the pergola, and when the vines flower, it makes the structure look beautiful as the flowers leap to life and cover the structure. Wisteria is exceptionally hardy. While it is possible to kill a Wisteria by pruning it too much, this is rare. Usually, people struggle to kill Wisteria even when they want to get rid of it. But part of the joy of gardening is being able to nurture a plant from a dry seed to a massive, thriving specimen.Wisteria has a reputation for being difficult to prune but this isn’t the case. Once you have established the routine of pruning your wisteria twice a year, you should be rewarded with a good display of flowers. Winter pruning is about shaping and training the Wisteria and preparing for the spring bloom. It’s a heavier prune than the summer prune. If you’re only going to prune your Wisteria once a year, you should do it in winter. Winter is also the time for hard pruning, if needed (more on that below). One of the more popular methods for encouraging flowering in your wisteria is to drive a shovel 8 to 10-inches into the ground, at a distance of a foot from the trunk of the vine. Make sure to put the plant in the ground a few weeks before the first predicted frost date in your region. Air Layering

Pruning once in the summer can be enough, but some gardeners frequently prune throughout the summer to maintain a neater appearance. Once blooming is done, you can prune every two weeks, once a month, or as often you choose until growth slows down at the end of summer. Wisterias are generally pruned twice, once in July and once in February or March depending on the weather. You need to prune before the buds break so those with warm gardens in the south of England may prune in January in good years. Never prune in severe weather, always choose a clement, still day.Wisterias are climbing plants par excellence. No matter how it is trained, a wisteria in full flower, with hundreds if not thousands of racemes, cannot fail to excite the beholder. Draped with their multitude of long racemes of white, pink, blue or mauve pea-flowers there is perhaps no more beautiful climber than wisteria. With many National Garden Scheme gardens graced with this romantic plant we wanted to find out more.
